Contact Lens Wearer Recommendations

This is just a review of some recommendations that will keep your eyes healthy.
  1.  Do not over wear your contact lenses. Please take out the contact lenses at least one hour before you go to sleep to allow your eyes to breathe and recover.
  2. Please dispose of the contact lenses as recommended by the Doctor. Keeping the contact lenses for longer than what is recommended can result in irritation and infection of the eyes.
  3. Only use Multi-Purpose Solution to clean and disinfect your contact lenses.
  4. Do not reuse the multi-purpose solution to store the contact lenses because it will not be effective in disinfecting the lenses.
  5. Do not swim with the contact lenses. If your contact lenses come in contact with water, please discard the contact lenses.
  6. Do not wear your contact lenses when you are sick, this can cause your eyes to be irritated.
  7. Stop wearing your contact lenses when your eyes are red or irritated and call our office for a follow-up. If you are not able to see us during closing hours or holidays, please seek emergency treatment at a hospital that has an Ophthalmologist on-call. Major hospitals like UCLA, USC, Loma Linda University, Pomona Hospital, San Antonio Hospital will have an Ophthalmologist on-call.
  8. Have a back up pair of glasses so that you can rest your eyes at the end of the day or take a break when your eyes are irritated. Most infections occur when a patient continues to wear contact lenses when their eyes are irritated.
  9. Wearing contacts while in the shower is not recommended because the shower pressure might pop the contact lenses out. Soap can also get in your eye which can lead to irritation. Take off your contacts if this happens.

Contact Lenses Clean & Care

Here are some tips on how to clean and care for your contact lenses.
  1. The contact lens need to be cleaned everyday at the end of the day to prevent infections.
  2. Only use contact lens solution that says “Multi-Purpose Solution” because all the other solutions do not have active ingredients to kill germs
  3. To clean your contact lens, place the lens in your palm. Put some contact lens solution on it and rub gently for 5 seconds on each side
    • Rinse the contact lens
    • Put the contact lens into the well of the contact lens case and fill it enough to completely submerge the lenses. Make sure there is no air bubbles trapped underneath the contact lens
  4. Never reuse a contact lens solution that was previously in the case. Throw old contact lens solution away. All the active ingredients that killed off the germs are used up and will not work again.
  5. Do not top off old contact lens solution with new solution because it will only dilute the active ingredients that kill off the germs.
  6. To clean your contact lens case, wash with warm water and let air dry. If you use a paper towel, lint may get caught in your contact lens which can cause irritation or infection in your eye.
  7. The contact lens can be in the contact lens case for up to 30 days without use. After 30 days, the contact lens solution needs to be switched.
Normal Adaptation:
  1. Eyes itch and lenses may move around
  2. One eye may be more comfortable
  3. One eye may see better than the other
Remove your lenses if:
  1. You notice unusual light sensitivity, redness or pain
  2. Irritation persists
  3. You notice unusual blurring
